Gwinnett Medical Center’s lifesaving electrophysiology (EP) program diagnoses and treats heart arrhythmias, of problems related to the heart’s rhythm. Located at GMC-Lawrenceville’s Strickland Heart Center, this program features two state-of-the-art labs, fully dedicated to EP.

A quivering or irregular heartbeat, also known as an arrhythmia, can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. According to the American Heart Association, an estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with such complications.

The most common heart irregularity, or cardiac arrhythmia, is called atrial fibrillation (AFib) and is due to a malfunction in the heart's electrical system. According to the website stopafib.org , as Baby Boomers continue to age, the AFib epidemic is expected to worsen. Some patients describe AFib as skipped heartbeats, followed by a thud and a speeding up or racing of the heart.

Atlanta's most advanced Electrophysiology Labs

Gwinnett Medical Center's cardiac services includes two of Metro Atlanta’s most state-of-the-art electrophysiology (EP) labs at its Strickland Heart Center in Lawrenceville. These labs will allow the cardiac experts at GMC to diagnose and treat heart arrhythmias, or problems related to the heart’s rhythm.

Only the most up-to-date equipment available was selected for the two new EP labs, all with the patient in mind. The EP X-ray equipment has a unique sensitivity, providing ultra-low dose imaging. Also, because it optimizes multiple cameras at once, procedure times are reduced.

GMC’s highly advanced 3D mapping systems provide precise topography of the heart. This allows cardiologists to easily pinpoint the arrhythmia, especially in the case of AFib, so the problem is quickly eliminated, thus reducing complications and promoting a very precise diagnosis.
