Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI)

Gwinnett Medical Center uses myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) to diagnose and determine multiple heart-related issues including:

  • Abnormal heart rhythms
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Adequate blood flow to the heart during exercise
  • The effectiveness of devices such as catheter or stent
  • The effectiveness of heart medications

MPI uses radioactive substances, known as tracers, to produce imagines of the heart muscle. When combined with exercise, the tracers help determine if areas of the heart are not receiving enough blood.

There are several types of MPI that Gwinnett Medical Center uses to diagnose and detect the above cardiac problems:

  • Exercise Myocardial Perfusion Imaging
  • Lexiscan Myocardial Perfusion Imaging
