Cardiac Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) can be used to scan your heart and determine how well it is functioning.

Before the test

  • Do not eat or drink for 6 hours before your test.
  • Do not drink caffeine or caffeine-free products (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate) for 12 hours before your test.
  • Let you physician know if you are taking inhalers or medication containing theophylline.

During the test

  • A radioactive substance, known as a tracer, will be injected into your vein via an IV.
  • Your scan will begin as soon as the tracer is absorbed. You will lie on a table and will be asked to be still while your heart is scanned.
  • The test typically takes about an hour.

After the test

  • Your doctor will view the images and notify you of the results within three to five days. A cardiologist will review and interpret the images and a report will be sent to your doctor.
